Katrina cats on 10/2/05 that "A Forever Home" brought up from New Orleans.

Our Katrina dogs and cats are listed below.
Most of the dogs
have advanced cases of heartworm and have begun treatment. Our vet
bills are already out of sight for these rescued animals and will only get
worse, as most of them need extensive care.

Pepper is
a black and white female 4 month old kitten. She is a bit skinny and is
very friendly.
10/17/05 Update: Pepper is doing great and has
had her shots and been spayed. She is now looking for a foster home.

Lulu Belle is
a 4 month old tortie female kitten. She is very happy to be somewhere that
is warm and dry and where she has lots of food.

Lulu Belle has gone to a foster home. They love her and will adopt her if
we don't find her owner.

Cayenne is
an adult emaciated orange tabby male. He was found a few days ago in his
house in New Orleans and is doing well now that he has food.
10/17/05 Update:
Cayenne was very, very thin when we got him. He is on kitten food and is
gaining weight and his abscess on his leg has cleared up. However, he has
now been diagnosed with diabetes and needs insulin shots twice a day, and
probably special food once he gains some weight. Cayenne is currently at
the vet's office and is looking for a special foster home once his
diabetes is stabilized.

Cayenne is going to a foster home tomorrow!

Jefferson is a
beautiful Lynx Point Snowshoe Siamese mix. He is a large boy and is very,
very talkative and outgoing.

Jazz (formerly called Scarlett until we discovered she was a he!)
is a beautiful young adult orange tabby. Jazz and Zydeco are
extremely attached to each other and cry if they are separated. Both
are thin.

Sunshine is a very friendly 5-month-old black male kitten. He is in the best
shape of all of the cats that we got and is extremely friendly. He loves to be
held and cuddled.
10/17/05 Update:
Sunshine was very lonely in his foster home when his foster
mom was at work all day, so he decided his foster mom was his play toy and
started attacking her when she came home from work. So the foster mom
decided to foster another HART cat to keep him company!
12/22/05 Update: Sunshine has been adopted by her foster family!

Gumbo (aka Jefferson) - Jefferson, who has been named "Gumbo" by the staff at the vet,
is a very friendly little terrier/beagle mix. He is cute as a button. He has heartworms.
10/17/05 Update:
Gumbo has started heartworm treatment. We have a foster lined up for him
when his treatment is completed.

Jambalaya is a 3-month-old female calico kitten. She is very sweet and friendly
but also very thin.
10/17/05 Update: Creole and Jambalaya have been put in a foster home
together. At first there was a lot of hissing and Jambalaya tried to beat
up Creole, but they have since become pals and spend all day playing
together.

Creole is a 3-month-old black female kitten. She is extremely thin and was
extremely dirty when she came in. She is very sweet and eating a lot to make up
for her small size.
10/17/05 Update:
Creole and Jambalaya have been put in a foster home together. At first
there was a lot of hissing and Jambalaya tried to beat up Creole, but they
have since become pals and spend all day playing together.

Cayenne is a retriever puppy who is hiding any
indication that he went through anything traumatic. He is VERY happy and very

Loisi is a little pit bull that was clearly used
for breeding. Loisi is small and emaciated with every rib on her
little body protruding. She is also sweet and very friendly. Update:

Ana (notice a theme here with the names!) is an older shepherd mix that seemed
very sad and lost. She is calm and sweet and once she knew we were her
friends she seemed to relax a bit. We are guessing that Ana is about 7 or
8 and she was the only one who is not significantly underweight.

Bayou is a beautiful setter/aussie mix. He is full
of life and never looked liked he has seen any hardship except he is
underweight. He is about a year or 2 and has an advanced case of
heartworms. 1/7/06 Update:

Cajun is a handsome young (about a year) reddish mix who is sweet, loving and
full of energy. He too has heartworms.

Houston was in the worst shape. 70% of
Houston's body was covered in tar. After 2 hours of washing with a strong
solvent we still could not get all the tar off of him. It looked like this
substance had been on him for a couple of weeks. Houston is now a bright blond color and
weighs about 50 pounds. He is calm and gentle and loving with lots of
kisses to give. Houston has an extremely advanced case of
heartworms, the most severe our vet has ever seen. 10/29/05 Update:
We are very sad to tell you that Houston died this morning. We mourn
his loss and will always carry him in our hearts.

Mardi is a gorgeous black retriever/chow mix. He was not happy about getting
back in a crate after the long ride but eventually cooperated. He is young and
playful and also has an advanced case of heartworms.

Riley
was one of our
first 2 Katrina rescue dogs. 10/19/05 Update:
Riley has completed his 2nd heartworm treatment! He is doing very well &
finding it hard to sit still like the doctor told him to! He'll be
neutered in 30 days & then he can find his forever home!
