Amos

Passed away June 17, 2010
Dear Hart,
“Famous Amos the Country Gentleman” passed over the Rainbow Bridge Thursday, June 17th 2010. Amos had been declining and this week he was unable to chew most food, so we took him to a neurologist. During the exam there were signs of significant issues with his brain and spinal cord with large masses in his abdomen. Amos was in discomfort and his prognosis was bleak. Carol and I decided that is would be better for Amos to pass in his sleep rather than prolong his suffering. So with us holding him, he passed over the Rainbow Bridge.
Amos was a great dog! Before HART rescued him we can only guess what his life was like. From what we learned, it was very, very hard. Even with this rough start, he loved everyone. Whenever we would walk him, he would stop so strangers could pet him. Everyone in the neighborhood remembered him because he always carried a stuffed toy. His favorite hobby was to sit in the window seat and watch the world go by as he waited for us to come home. Carol and I joked that he had the most muscular eyes because Amos, as we would say, liked to “conserve his energy”, but his eyes were always scanning and he missed little. He was always thinking and I remember one time when I went to give him a bath, as I lowered him into the tub he wouldn’t fit! I finally realized that as he was lowered he would spread his legs so he could hold onto the edges of the tub and when I would lift him, his legs would go limp! Shortly after we adopted him, we took him out to the barn where I board a horse and Amos was so EXCITED because the farmer keeps bunnies on the property as free range pets. Amos thought he had gone straight to heaven and was very disappointed when we wouldn’t let him chase them. As we drove off the property, he jumped into the back window and stared at us like, just open the door and I will be right back!
Amos was always a calming influence on his close dog friends, Yoda, Snoopy, and MacTavish. Amos LOVED rolls in the grass, walks, running through the fields and trails with us at Pohick Bay Park, Meadowood, the Shenandoah, and Williamsburg, and ESPECIALLY rides in the car or truck. He preferred to sit in the front passenger’s seat of the truck, so he could get the best view. He was always ready for any adventure even when he couldn’t walk well. He was determined to keep up with Carol, Yoda, and I. We would walk slowly at his pace and you could tell he loved every moment. Shortly before he passed, I was walking him when a rabbit ran right in front of us and Amos came to life! He stared at the rabbit, lowered his ears and hunkered down and as soon as he took a step, the rabbit ran with Amos pursuing as best as he could.
We are still mourning the loss of our very special beagle boy. Thanks HART for bringing him into our lives which we were lucky to share with him for seven years.
Amos, we’ll see you on the other side of the Rainbow! Go get the bunnies!
