April 25, 2003 Daizy Mae came to us as a scared & scarred little girl. She was between 8-9 years old. She had just survived heartworm treatment & kennel cough, and had a nasty heart murmur. But there was something so special & sweet about her that we immediately feel in love with her. Everyone who met her loved her sweet ways. We decided right away that she would spend the rest of her time with us & that we would do whatever it took to give her the love, snuggles & play-time she had missed. Our big fuzzy Bassett "Baron" agreed & immediately let her have his own bed & play with his toys. She would occasionally share "his" bed & toys with him. He seemed to sense how special & fragile she was. We had three wonderful years together. In her fourth year with us Daisy started having major health problems, complicated by congestive heart failure & then pneumonia. She grew very tired & was to weak to play. I knew it was her time to go home. Baron, Daisy & I all shared an apple (her favorite food) on April 25th, and then we let her go home. Our only regret is that we hadn't met her sooner, & could have had more time to love & snuggle her. We thank HART for this precious gift. Johanna, Ray& Jake
Wertz & Baron Von Moose.
December 2000 – March 31, 2003 We adopted Portia from Hart in February 2001, when she was 8
weeks old. She was a very cute puppy with sharp teeth and an intense curiosity.
As a very small puppy she would sit outside looking at the wildlife with her
ears pointed in different directions. She grew into a strong dog with an
insatiable appetite for any food she could get. Once big enough nothing we did
could deter her from jumping up to check out the kitchen countertops for food.
She loved to run, and played daily with our neighbor's dog. Our three boys, now
13, 9 and 5 adored her. They chased her, played with her, clambered over and
around her, and fell asleep with her. I walked her daily, and my husband ran
with her. We went on family walks, took her biking with us along the C & O
canal, and climbing on the Billy Goat Trail. Portia was a very adaptable dog who
loved to be with people and other dogs. She was all hound and it was difficult
to distract her from interesting smells and wildlife. Lately, she had started to
mellow and would relax during the day, until the boys came home from school, or
someone opened the refrigerator. She was a much beloved member of our family. |
