HART's Special Needs Pets

Special Needs Pets HART often rescues dogs or cats that are in desperate need of medical care.  Many of the dogs and cats will need to be housed for several weeks before they can appear on the web pages and be adopted.  The veterinary care is expensive and we must rely on your donations to cover the costs.

special donation or sponsorship to help with some of these costs would mean a lot to one of these "special" guys - and to HART.  Or maybe you can help in another way.  Do you have some free time?  Would you be willing to foster a special dog or cat and gain the satisfaction of nursing him/her back to health?  Or maybe you are available to transport them to and from vet visits.  These are all wonderful animals looking for a little extra help.

These Special Needs pets are currently under HART's care:

Maggie (FC)

Maggie (FC)

Maggie has no idea why she was given up by her owners after all these years. Yes, she is old and needs more attention, but won't we all be in that situation one day? Maggie has diabetes and needs eyedrops. She is crate trained, quiet and docile. She will sit on command and loves to ride in the car. Maggie's days of winning Best in Show might be over, but this is one beagle who will win your heart, if given the chance. Please consider adding this sweetheart to your home.
Maggie (FC) is now available for adoption. Click here for more information.

Maggie (FC) is sponsored by: Brian, Carol & Amos (HART Beagle); and by Lisa, in memory of Chuck.

Max 15

Max 15

3/3/08: Sweet, little Max was found wandering the streets late one night by a kind young man who took him home. While Max had an owner, because of her age and health situation, she was no longer able to care for Max, so she agreed to turn him over to HART. Unfortunately, it was soon discovered that Max had many health problems, including cancer. While HART will do everything possible for Max, the oncologist says there is no cure, and his life expectancy is about 3 to 8 months, even with treatment. Max's foster parents, the parents of the young man who found Max, want the rest of Max's days to be filled with comfort, security, and love, and HART will make sure he receives required medical attention. Please consider sponsoring Max and making a donation in his name. This is the sweetest little boy you will ever meet. He deserves the best. See more photos of Max.
For more information about Max 15, please contact Pat.

Max 15 is sponsored by: Mercedes, in memory of Lovey and Lulu; and by Jess and Keith Farb, in memory of Sonar and Stumpy; and by Jeanine, in memory of Oliver.

Sweetiepie

Sweetiepie

Sweetiepie has had a rough life. Cold, hungry and very pregnant, Sweetiepie was tied to the shelter’s front door. She had her puppies at the shelter, but sadly, they all passed away. Sweetiepie next had to undergo treatment for heartworms. UPDATE: 6/4/07 - While she was in boarding, she was doing very poorly and had lost a lot of weight and was having difficulty walking. We took her to a specialist who found what they thought was a huge mass on her kidney. They operated and actually discovered some strange things going on inside of her. It appeared that her gallbladder had ruptured (possibly more than one time), she had some congenital defect with one of her kidneys... it was adhering to her other organs and it was only part of a kidney, and they drained fluids off of her knees... Poor Sweetiepie was a mess. Sweetiepie is now in a foster home where she receives love, attention and the medical care she needs.
Sweetiepie is now available for adoption. Click here for more information.

Sweetiepie is sponsored by: Stephanie D., in memory of Toby and in honor of Simon; and by Michelle Koren, in memory of my loving Misha Dog of 14 years.

ZigZag 2

ZigZag 2

ZigZag, a gray tabby boy with white paws and chest, was rescued by one of HART's dog program volunteers when he showed up on her porch one day, looking for love. He's VERY affectionate with his foster "mom", running to greet her whenever she comes home. He's also quick to hop into her lap for cuddles and "kitty conversation". ZigZag has tested positive for FIV, but is in excellent health.
ZigZag 2 is now available for adoption. Click here for more information.

ZigZag 2 is sponsored by: Maryanna, in honor of Phantom.

Mason

Mason

Mason came to HART with a disease that is unfortunately all too common in cats who've lived outdoors: she has tested positive for Feline Leukemia. Her disease is manageable, but her family needs to be careful to ensure that she doesn't infect other cats.
Mason is now available for adoption. Click here for more information.

Mason is sponsored by: Anonymous, in memory of Gail, who loved cats.

Joe Bob

Joe Bob

9/15/07: It’s hard to believe: a couple of months ago we were all crying our eyes out because of Joe Bob’s cancer diagnosis. The prognosis was not good, but Chris, one of our fabulous adopters and Joe Bob’s foster, decided that the rest of his life would make him forget all the bad things that had marked his past. She has spoiled him good. Joe Bob’s future with cancer still is clouded, but this happy fellow has no care for the future; he is fully living in the here and now. These photos attest to Joe Bob’s joy and the spoiling from Chris. Thanks Chris and thanks Joe Bob, we can all learn from the two of you!

Joe Bob is sponsored by: Melissa; and by Bailey McGreevy.

Andrea

Andrea

I'm Andrea, and I'm one of the sweetest kittens foster meowmy has ever seen. I'm playful, my purr motor runs full time, and I've never met a person I didn't love! My sister and I were brought to a shelter as kittens, and because we had umbilical hernias and would require simple surgery, we were going to be put to sleep! Thankfully, HART was there to rescue us and got us the surgery that fixed our hernias. But the doctor found I had a heart murmur, so I had to stay at foster meowm's and get older and bigger and get checked out again while my sister got to go on and find her furever home. UPDATE: 6/20/06 I was just checked out by the veterinary cardiologist again and I am doing great! He expects me to live a long and healthy life since my heart condition has not gotten any worse. I will need to go back in for an echocardiogram once a year just to make sure my heart is fine. I'm available to adopt or foster.

Charlie 3

Charlie 3

Charlie is a senior chow that found himself in a rural shelter. HART was able to help this sweet man to safety, but he is now being treated for heartworms. His first treatment went well! He's a spunky, sweet fella - after his 2nd treatment, he'll be ready for a great home!

Note: The story of Charlie illustrates how important it is to have your dog on Heartworm Preventative. Left untreated, heartworm disease can result in death. The treatment for heartworm disease is expensive and dangerous. Luckily, these dogs responded to treatment. Heartworm disease is easily prevented. Click here for more information. UPDATE: 6/15/05 Charlie has completed his heartworm treatments & can't wait to find his forever home!

For more information about Charlie 3, please contact Charlie.

Sassy

Sassy

This active young lady found herself on the Special Needs page because she had to have emergency back surgery - it seems that one of her discs burst & she could no longer walk! UPDATE: 6/5/07 Sassy is doing fantastic. She has not had a recurrence of any back issues and now only needs a real home! Sassy needs an adult-only home, preferably where she can be the only dog, although she does get along with submissive dogs. Sassy is a true "character" - stubborn, cheeky and very cute!
Sassy is now available for adoption. Click here for more information.
