Volunteer Opportunities

Meet some of our wonderful volunteers!

Helping with our Dogs

The HART dog program has dogs in foster homes, boarded at local vets and at our kennel.  The greatest volunteer needs are in the following areas:

Dog Adoption Days - The weekly Dog Adoption Days are the best opportunity for our dogs to meet their new owner and find their forever home!  We need volunteers who can attend an Adoption Day and hold a dog on a leash for the event.  The more volunteers we have - the more dogs that have the possibility of finding their forever home!  It only takes a few hours of your time and it makes a huge difference in a dog's life!  We have adoption events each weekend - please see our Adoption Days Schedule.  The Dog Adoption Events Volunteer Information page provides additional details on the events.  Petco requires that volunteers attending the Adoption Days be 18 or older.  Most of our Adoption Days are at Petco.  Occasionally we attend special events like the Reston Pet Fiesta, where we welcome volunteers over the age of 16, and under the age of 16 if accompanied by an adult over the age of 18 for the entire event (one adult per child).  Please understand that this is for the safety of our dogs and volunteers.  There are many other great ways that volunteers under the age of 18 can help HART!   Please review Volunteers Under Age 18 and learn about all the wonderful ways you can help our dogs!

Fostering dogs and puppies - Please see Foster Program for more information on fostering.

To volunteer for the dog program, please complete a Volunteer Profile.  You will then receive an email invitation to join our HART Volunteer Distribution List (Yahoo Group).  Please follow the instructions to add yourself to the distribution list.  This distribution list is how we communicate to volunteers about Adoption Events and special opportunities or needs for HART.

If you are not able to volunteer at Adoption Days or Foster a dog but would like information on how to provide additional assistance, please send an e-mail to Maggie.  Someone will contact you soon to coordinate your much appreciated help with our dog program!!

Helping with our Cats

The HART cat program has cats at Sterling Petsmart and in foster homes. Volunteers are needed in the following areas:

bullet Staffing Adoption Days - see our Adoption Days Schedule
bullet Cleaning cages at Petsmart
bullet Fostering cats and kittens - Please see Foster Program for more information on fostering.
bullet Bottle feeding kittens
bullet Transporting cats to our vets
bullet Assisting with cat adoptions
bullet Cat adoption follow-ups

The cat program asks that volunteers under 16 be accompanied by an adult.  To volunteer for the cat program, please complete a Volunteer Profile or email Susan.

Kids helping HART Dogs and Cats

There are many special kids under the age of 18 who would like to help the HART dogs and cats and we welcome your assistance!  Please review Volunteers Under Age 18 to learn about all the great ways you can help our dogs and cats!

Helping the HART Office

If you have some hours each week you can spare to help staff the HART office, please contact Charlie.

Fundraising Events

Throughout the year HART organizes several events to raise money to save more dogs and cats. These include:

bullet Spring Silent Auction
bullet Summer Night at the Vineyards
bullet Fall Casino Night

If you can help in organizing future events, please complete a Volunteer Profile or contact Cordy Galligan, by phone at (703) 450-3839 or by E-mail at hart90@erols.com. The more money we make, the more animals are helped!

Volunteers' Assumption of Risk

Because volunteers are considered to "assume the risk" of any injury stemming from their volunteer undertakings, HART cannot buy insurance for injuries incurred by volunteers during HART events and activities.  In the event of an injury, volunteers must look to their personal insurance for applicable compensation.
