United Way/CFC 2008
United Way #8363, CFC-Federal #75875, CVC-Virginia #8183

RexTied up in a park with no food or water -- blind, largely deaf, and totally helpless -- beautiful young Rex would soon have died had he not been found and taken to a public shelter.  Shelter staff quickly realized that Rex's spirit -- his gentle, affectionate manner and unwavering trust in people -- was even more impressive than his considerable physical beauty. They also realized, however, that given his severe disabilities, he stood no chance of being adopted through the shelter. The shelter turned to HART, who answered the call.

Rex can hear only very high-pitched sounds. Even after surgery by HART's veterinary ophthalmologist, his vision is limited to seeing light and shadows. Although Rex didn’t really have special needs, he needed a special family who would look past his surface imperfections and accept him for his loyal, loving disposition. After being discarded and left to die, Rex is now a member of wonderful family that includes a three-legged canine sibling.

HART is funded by individuals like YOU through the United Way/CFC Campaign and generous donations throughout the year.  Our adoption fees cover only a small fraction of our expenditures, so without YOUR SUPPORT through the United Way/CFC campaign and general donations, our doors would close forever.  The decisions made now, for United Way/CFC contributions for 2008, will ultimately determine the fate of so many dogs and cats waiting for our help.

Of every dollar donated to HART, over 96 cents goes directly to the support, care and placement of dogs and cats!  With overhead numbers this low, you can rest easy knowing that the animals you want to protect are receiving the money you have set aside for them!

Donations through United Way/CFC are the only funds we can count and budget on.  Our budget is what enables us to make the decision as to whether we are able to say YES when we get the call for help.  Every other source of funding, although also very crucial, varies from one month to the next.  Our steady flow of annual United Way/CFC donations is all we have to truly bank on from month to month, vet bill to vet bill.

Rex's story is just one example of what millions of dogs, cats, puppies and kittens face each year.  Countless animals are mewing and wagging their tails behind shelter walls, unaware that they are on death row.  Countless others are living homeless, alone, scared, sick, starving and worse.  Since we get the daily calls, we must face this terrible reality every day.  The greatest gift we receive in our work is when we can say YES.  It is YOU, through your United Way/CFC contributions, who allow us to say YES ... and for that we are all grateful.

Please designate HART United Way #8363, CFC-Federal #75875, CVC-Virginia #8183 for your CFC/United Way contribution.  If your employer does not participate in the United Way/CFC campaign, you may make a direct donation using Just Give or PayPal.
