Dog Adoption Fee
HART's Dog Adoption Fee is $250.
Puppy Adoption Fee is $350.
(for all puppies under 6 months)
This fee covers a number of services to provide you with a healthy pet. Adult HART dogs have been altered and puppies receive a certificate to cover the cost of the spay/neuter at designated HART vets. HART dogs and puppies receive Heartworm/Lyme/Erlichea tests and vaccinations appropriate to their age.
Our Adoption Fee is less than what you would pay for these veterinary services individually! A random survey conducted in October 2005 of Northern Virginia Veterinary Clinics provided the following price ranges for the services indicated:
-
Office Visit $35-$49
-
Sterilization of Rescue Animals is mandated by Commonwealth Law
| Neuter (Male) |
$190-$260 |
| Spay (Female) |
$220-$310 |
These fees do not include pre-screening, post-surgical drugs or antibiotic medications, or extended hospitalization for complications.
-
Immunizations/Vaccines
| Rabies (1 year / 3 year) |
$29-$42 |
| DHLPP(Distemper/Hepatitis/Leptospirosis/ Parainfluenza/Parvovirus combined vaccines) |
$35-$45 |
| DA2PPC (combined vaccines) |
$35-$45 |
| Lyme Disease |
$25-$30 |
| Bordetella |
$24-$34 |
-
Parasite Screen and Medication $28-$43
-
Heartworm Screen $25-$41
-
Heartworm Medication for 12 months
(Oral flea/Tick preventive costs are similar, so double cost)
| Less than 25 lbs. |
$40-$55 |
| 26-50 lbs |
$70-$80 |
| More than 50 lbs |
$100 |
-
Dental Prophylaxis is priced by animal weight $50-$200
-
Nails, Ears, Anal Glands $10-$25
-
DAILY Boarding fees are priced by animal weight $10-$30
In summary, if we look at the most conservative estimate of what you'd have to pay for the services generally covered by HART, we'd find:
| Dog |
Services covered by HART |
The Adopter pays |
Difference |
| Female Lab |
$280 spay
+ 35 office visit
+ 29 rabies
+ 35 DHLPP or DA2PPC
+ 24 Bordetella
+ 28 parasite
+ 25 HW test
+ 10 Nails,ears
+ 12 HW and Flea preventative (1 month)
------------------
$478 + post-op drugs + boarding, etc. |
$250 |
$228 + |
Of course, these numbers do not reflect many of the day to day health issues that our dogs face. For example, if the test for parasites comes back showing that the dog has roundworms, we will pay to treat the dog.
